Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to thank Mrs Dunn for ensuring everything ran smoothly whilst I was on leave in the UK. She did an outstanding job! 

On my return it was great to hear some of our students starting to refer to our school values in particular our kids version: 

Respect 

I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated. 

Relationships 

I belong at school and help others belong by accepting others differences. 

Resilience 

I get back up from tough situations and help others get back up too. 

Naidoc 

On Friday our students participated in a series of fun and interactive First Nation themed activities as part of our continued Naidoc Celebrations.

Education Assistants Appreciation Week

Last week we recognised the work of education assistants with a gift bag of yummies. Our education assistants play such an important role in the education of students across all classes. Thank you for the fabulous work you do with your students and colleagues.

If your child will not be returning to Westminster ESC next year, it is very important that you let us know as soon as possible to ensure acurate planning.

Week 10 - Final week of Term 3

Our final Assembly for the term will be held on Tuesday 20th September at 2pm. As I am sure most of you are aware, in honour of the Queen's passing, a public holiday has been announced for Thursday 22nd and therefore, there will be no school. The last day of term is Friday 23rd September.

I would like to wish all of our families a safe and happy school holiday break and I look forward to a very exciting and busy Term 4.

Merit Award Winners - Week 8

News from Room 4

We have been having a busy, but fun-filled semester. Our new students to room 4 have settled in and are playing nicely with the other students; welcoming them and helping them learn the routine of the day.

We have put a tremendous effort into our role play learning stations as the Early Years Learning Framework states that; ‘Role play provides an invaluable means for children to consolidate their understanding of knowledge and skills through meaningful experiences, or to try out new ideas in a safe and familiar environment’.

Role play can be beneficial for students with autism to help them learn a variety of social and learning skills. Students with autism often struggle with both social interactions and novel situations. When a social interaction occurs in an unfamiliar setting, the situation becomes even more challenging. The purpose of role playing is to familiarize students with the types of situations that may occur, and to equip them with language and actions to appropriately participate in those situations.

Our expert and passionate teaching team explicitly teach these skills through modelling the language and actions.  We first develop a simple script, model the role play to the student, then support the student to practise the role play situation using visuals and a range of communication tools.

The students have enjoyed seeing what ‘theme’ the role play station resembles such as a birthday party setting, home kitchen, home office, hospital, dentist and café.

We have made use of our lovely weather here by including outdoor play into most of our daily learning and stations work which the children thoroughly enjoy. They particularly like the hands-on Maths station where they can use many assorted resources for counting and pattern making.

Naidoc Celebrations

Celebrating NAIDOC week (part 2) to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Various rotation of activities were held including Threading, 6 seasons Butterfly colouring, Boomerang-craft, Face painting, Sand Exploration and Story telling.

PBS

Next term, the students at Westminster ESC will be taught explicit behaviour expectations lessons, from our Positive Behaviour Support Matrix that was developed with staff and students earlier in the year.

The staff have received further training on how to teach, re-enforce and encourage expected behaviour. The behaviour lessons taught fall under our three school expectations of; We Are Respectful, We are safe and We are Engaged.

The staff have been busy designing engaging, hands-on lessons that will be delivered weekly, and where the students are given the opportunity to practice the positive behaviour taught. This will then become part of our teaching and learning at Westminster ESC.
